Women have played a prominent role in the history and development of Al Rashid. During the 1930’s, the pioneer women were the driving force to raise the funds to build Canada’s first mosque. This was a monumental feat as the building was done during the harsh years of the great depression.
Since then, the women of Al Rashid have been pivotal to the success of every project the community has taken on. In the 1980’s, the Muslim ladies were involved in the establishment of the existing Al Rashid mosque. In addition, their advocacy work enabled the preservation of the original Al Rashid mosque as a historical site within Fort Edmonton Park.
Al Rashid’s Helping Hands Society is active throughout Edmonton providing religious, social, cultural and humanitarian services. The Helping Hands Society is a pivotal cog at Al Rashid.
